On April 29, Infanta Sofía of Spain will reach a significant milestone in her life: her 18th birthday.

Although she is not destined for the throne, her coming of age marks the beginning of a new phase filled with important decisions, both personally and within the monarchy.

For months, sources close to the Royal Household have mentioned the possibility of the Infanta joining military training once she completes her studies in Wales.

“The kings have discussed her future and the possibility of following the same path as Leonor,” they revealed to Monarquía Confidencial.

Princess Leonor is already immersed in her military instruction and is currently sailing aboard the training ship Elcano.

If Sofía decided to follow in her sister’s footsteps, it would not be a surprise, as military training is a tradition in several monarchies, including the British one. However, the final decision will depend on her own aspirations.

Sisters, but with distinct personalities

Over the years, the difference between Leonor and Sofía has been evident. While the heir to the throne maintains a formal and reserved image, Sofía has shown a more relaxed and spontaneous character, something that has caught the attention of monarchy experts.

“Her naturalness could become a valuable trait in her role within the royal family, although it may also generate comparisons with her sister,” analysts affirm.

Despite having a smaller public role, last year she made her solo debut at an official event, presiding over the entrance to the photography awards organized by National Heritage.

Her performance was closely followed from Zarzuela and received a very positive reception.

A key year for the royal family

While Sofía prepares for her transition to adulthood, 2025 will also be a crucial year for her older sister.

Leonor, after her experience on the training ship, will continue her instruction at the General Air and Space Academy in San Javier, Murcia, as part of her preparation to assume her future role as Queen of Spain.
