Real Madrid had lost heavily at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium (0-3) in the quarterfinal of the Champions League, and now the questions surrounding Carlo Ancelotti’s future have intensified.

The name of the Spanish coach Xabi Alonso (43) is once again being linked with the ‘los blancos’. Spanish journalist Paco González, director of Tiempo de Juego on Cadena COPE,  referenced the Basque coach live on air.

Xabi Alonso, next coach for Real Madrid? “Already signed!”

“Some people say that Xabi Alonso is already signed. I don’t know for sure, but there are those who take it for granted. And besides, he hasn’t confirmed that he’ll stay at Leverkusen next season,” he said.

The comments come in the context of growing speculation about Alonso’s future, with the Bayer Leverkusen manager yet to publicly confirm his intentions for next season. At the Santiago Bernabeu, many people see the Basque coach as the natural successor to Carlo Ancelotti.

The fans are already calling for a dramatic change of direction at the end of the current campaign, as Real Madrid’s hopes for the Champions League or La Liga titles are getting a major blow week by week.

Real Madrid is waiting for the second leg against Arsenal

Despite the setback, the message from within the Real Madrid officials remains one of focus and resilience. Club officials are refusing to look beyond the second leg of the tie against Arsenal and believe that all is not lost. While acknowledging the team’s inconsistencies this season, Madrid’s leadership is urging fans to support the players in their efforts to turn the tie around.

President Florentino Pérez is reportedly confident that the Santiago Bernabéu will act as the ‘12th man’ during the crucial return leg against The Gunners. The expectation is that the fans will show up in force, as they have in the past for high-stakes fixtures.

However, key players such as Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham are under increasing pressure to deliver. With the club’s season hanging in the balance, these stars are expected to step up when it matters most.

Xabi Alonso, a football legend in Spain

Xabi Alonso wrote history as Bayer Leverkusen coach. The Basque, who signed for Die Werkself in 2022, won the Bundesliga last season, as well as the German Cup and Supercup. He also led Leverkusen to the Europa League final last year, losing against Atalanta (0-3).

As a player, Xabi Alonso played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning five trophies with ‘Los Blancos’, including La Liga and the Champions League.

Xabi, born in Tolosa, a town in the province of Gipuzkoa, won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, as well as two European Championships (2008 and 2012).
