As the Tiger-Cats approach the start of 2025, they continue to re-sign their former CFL draft picks to their active roster. According to the CFL Transactions list, the latest of those former Tiger-Cats draft picks to get another chance to make an impact with Hamilton is National running back Matthew Peterson. Peterson joins a running back room that is in a state of flux.
Coming into the 2024 CFL season, James Butler was the clear front-runner to be the Tiger-Cats’ primary running back. Unfortunately for Butler, Greg Bell stepped into the feature-back role for the Tiger-Cats as the season progressed. Bell ran the ball 94 times for 625 yards and six touchdowns and added 29 receptions for 230 yards and a receiving touchdown during the second half of the Tiger-Cats 2024 season.
Peterson is a 5’10”, 210-pound running back from Brooks, Alberta. The Tiger-Cats drafted Peterson in the 4th round of the 2023 CFL draft. Since being drafted by Hamilton, Peterson has struggled to earn a role on the Tiger-Cat’s regular-season roster. In 2024, Peterson played in the Tiger-Cats pre-season games but was part of the final roster cuts on June 1st.
The Alberta native played U Sports football at the University of Alberta from 2019 until 2024. In 2023, he was the Canada West Player of the Year; in 2022, and in 2022, he was on the 1st team of the U Sports All-Canadian team. While playing 38 games for the Golden Bears, Peterson ran 477 times for 3,032 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 62 passes for 583 yards and caught three touchdown passes.
