The Egyptian King and Queen with the ‘Scouser’ kids! How Mohamed Salah’s family’s stunning Merseyside home – and a £40m contract – helped keep Liverpool’s star out of Saudi’s grasp

Mohamed Salah granted the wish of millions of Liverpool fans worldwide on Friday morning when the club revealed he had signed a new deal.

The Egyptian superstar has been tearing up the record books ever since joining the Reds for a then-record £39million from Italian club Roma in 2017.

His first contract at Anfield saw him bank £90,000 per week. He’s now set to earn around £375,000 every seven days, or nearly £20million per year.

Almost eight years on from joining, Liverpool has become a second home to Salah, who has been christened the ‘Egyptian King’ by doting fans on Merseyside.

By his side is wife Magi, who he has known since childhood and married in 2013, and their two daughters: Makka, 10, and Kayan, five.

And it’s their complete contentment in Liverpool which is one of the main reasons Salah is extending his historic stay.

While money, job security, and ambition will all have factored in his decision to stay, salah made clear that his family’s contentment in Liverpool was a big factor.

‘They feel at home,’ said. ‘They were very happy, Magi and the kids, they were very happy that we’re staying another two years. It feels like home so everyone was happy.

‘I think Makka was the happiest one in the family, she wanted us to stay. Of course we all wanted to stay but Makka because her friends are here and the school. It was a very good vibe after the moment that I signed.

‘I’m enjoying my life here. I’m enjoying my football. My family also feels at home. We enjoy every moment in the city and every moment in the club.’

He added: ‘Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.’

Salah, 32, met Magi when the pair were schoolkids in the Egyptian village of Basion Gharbia. He comes from a humble background. As a child, he would make four-hour bus journeys each way five days per week to train with Al Mokawloon, frequently missing school. That determination has never left him.

His home life is geared towards keeping himself in the best shape possible. His house, which is in the same neighbourhood as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, is kitted out with two gym rooms and also has cryotherapy facilities and a hyperbaric chamber.

In layman’s terms, cryotherapy is the use of ice-led machines to decrease swelling by constricting blood vessels, while a hyperbaric chamber has air pressure levels three times higher than normal conditions to help the lungs spread more oxygen around the body.

‘I am constantly looking to improve my physical condition,’ he once told France Football.

‘It’s true that I like to say that my house looks like a hospital, [but] my wife doesn’t like that! [She] says that I spend more time with my machines than with her!’

Earlier this year, he shared a video of his daughter Kayan working out with him, before she planted a kiss on his cheek.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that Salah appears to be getting better physically. Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, typically do not renew the contracts of players over 30 because they risk physically declining. With Salah, that risk is still there, but he has mitigated it superbly.

He’s 32, but in pre-season, he beat his Liverpool co-stars in manager Arne Slot’s fitness test. Gary Neville described him in February as a ‘brick wall’.

Salah eats broccoli with almost every meal and other ‘superfoods’ are often on the menu. He is particularly fond of the Egyptian national dish koshary, a mixture of fried rice, pasta, pulses, onions and a tomato sauce.

As a Muslim, Salah has never touched alcohol. During Ramadan it is believed he alters his routine to do a 2am gym session. Fatty foods are rare but he does allow a ‘cheat day’ pizza.

In 2020, he allowed people a peek into his home in an advert with Vodafone, where he frolicked in his spacious back garden with first daughter Makka.

In the video, Salah was chasing Makka around the garden before catching her and lifting her into the air.

Every year, Salah and his family take the step of posting a photo of them around the Christmas tree, something which brings an inevitable backlash, given his Muslim faith.

Last December, they posed in matching pyjamas for his Christmas post, smiling in front of their tree and a gingerbread person for an Instagram following which has swelled to 64.6 million users.

His faith is clear in how he plays his football, though. One of his most common celebrations is the ‘sujud’, where he bows on his knees, places his forehead on the turf, and prays.

‘It’s not kissing the ground,’ Salah explained to CNN in 2018. ‘It’s something like praying or, like, thanking God for what I have received. But, yeah, it’s just praying and praying for a win. I’ve always done that since I was young, everywhere.’

Playing for a top club in European competition every season, Salah’s schedule is demanding.

However, he still finds time for two of his beloved hobbies: chess and yoga.

He once told Sky Sports how he is ‘addicted’ to chess and plays it ‘every day’.

Salah plays regularly on Chess.com – a website that allows users to play against others globally – and said he has acheived a rating of 1,400, which is fairly strong considering many don’t surpass 1,000. One day he would like to play the legendary Magnus Carlsen.

A lifelong American supporter said last year that he ended up playing against Salah on the chess website after bumping into him on Liverpool’s pre-season tour.

Knowing Salah is an avid chess fan, he invited him to play after bumping into him in a Starbucks in Pittsburgh.

Salah won, but he remembered the fan and later invited him to play again online, with the supporter getting his revenge, as he told the Men in Blazers podcast.

His humility and natural talent have always endeared him to Liverpool fans. For a man who has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup (twice), UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Community Shield, Salah has never come across as boastful. He is also the club’s third top scorer ever.

Armed with another two years on his contract, you’d be a fool not to back him to topple more records.
