Tebas slams Barcelona once more « Euro Weekly News

La Liga president Javier Tebas has once again insisted that Dani Olmo should not be registered with FC Barcelona, reigniting the ongoing dispute over the player’s eligibility.

Barcelona had managed to secure Olmo’s registration in January after facing financial difficulties, using a legal injunction to keep him in the squad. However, the final decision now rests with Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD) and Tebas remains firm in his stance.

Tebas criticises Barcelona

“If Olmo signed the contract knowing that in December he could stop being a Barca player and not be registered, how am I going to give a precautionary measure to a player who was aware that could happen to him?” Tebas questioned, in a press conference.

He pointed out that Barcelona had months to resolve the issue, but failed to find a financial solution in time. “There were four months for Barca to come to a solution and make decisions along those lines. What happened? Well, no and in the last three days they wanted to sort everything right out in a hurry,” he added.

Barcelona remains confident in Olmo’s case

FC Barcelona remains optimistic regarding the resolution of its appeal submitted to the Sports Council concerning the registration of Dani Olmo. The club maintains that the necessary documentation was submitted to La Liga within the stipulated time frame.

However, La Liga asserts that the documents were sent on January 3, three days after the official deadline had lapsed. The final ruling on Dani Olmo’s registration is expected to be made in early April, as reported by Spanish outlet AS. Until then, Barcelona will continue to push for a favourable outcome, while Olmo remains a key player in their squad.

Dani Olmo’s strong performances

Despite all the controversies, Olmo has been in excellent form for Barcelona this season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in 22 appearances. In the last league match, he found the net in a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. He could even start on the pitch in Tuesday night’s Copa del Rey semi-final against Atlético Madrid.

Olmo joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig last summer for a transfer fee of €55 million, as reported by Transfermarkt. If the club fails to maintain his registration and he leaves as a free agent, it could result in financial losses exceeding €250 million, including his market value and potential salary claims.
