His decision to leave Twitter, now X, in 2022 came shortly after Elon Musk’s controversial takeover. In a parting message to his 12.5 million followers, Fry posted a simple farewell using Scrabble tiles to spell out ‘Goodbye.’ He described Musk’s management as the final blow to a platform he already felt had lost its way.

Comparing himself to 19th-century abolitionist Thomas Clarkson, he mused, “Clarkson travelled tirelessly, educating people about the horrors of slavery. Sometimes I wonder if I should spend my remaining years doing the same for social media.”

For Fry, the solution lies not in eradicating platforms but in reshaping them. “The garden of ideas should be a place where everyone thrives. Right now, it’s overgrown with weeds, and the flowers can’t flourish.”
