Ruben Amorim would like to see a rejuvenated Harry Maguire earn an England recall when Thomas Tuchel names his first squad a week on Friday.
Maguire has gone from losing the captaincy at Old Trafford and being offered to West Ham to becoming a cornerstone of Amorim’s back-three and he headed the winner against Ipswich on Wednesday night.
Having helped England reach a World Cup semi-final and Euros final, Maguire missed last summer’s European Championship because of injury and will wait to see if he can add to his 64 caps against Latvia and Albania this month.
‘If he is picked, I would be really happy for him. I think he deserves it,’ said Amorim.
‘He is a great guy. I think he still needs to improve because players can always improve but his performances at the moment are quite good.
‘You feel that he is more of a leader now and that can help a national team. So I hope he is with them for the next games.’

Maguire, 31, is still regarded as an important representative of United despite losing the armband to Bruno Fernandes.
Last week, he attended a dinner in Manchester for the Michael Carrick Foundation, joining the likes of Wayne Rooney and Jill Scott in supporting the former United player’s charity work.
