He said he was out. But is he really? Tyson Fury, the larger-than-life Manchester heavyweight, has whipped fans into a frenzy once again after being spotted looking sharp and powerful in a newly posted gym video – just months after hanging up his gloves.
The 36-year-old, who famously calls himself the ‘Gypsy King’, announced his retirement in January following back-to-back defeats to Ukrainian maestro Oleksandr Usyk. In a now-viral social media video at the time, Fury told fans:
“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask.” – Perhaps referencing the failed negotiations with Anthony Joshua’s camp. But now – in true Fury fashion – he might be backtracking.
Fans spot the fire still burning
After months of family time and a quieter life out of the ring, Fury has suddenly emerged back in the gym, sharing footage of himself hammering a heavy bag with speed and power that left fans buzzing.
The clip, showing Fury unloading punches with signature force, has sparked intense speculation online. One fan declared, “He’s definitely making a comeback.” Another added, “Here we go, the comeback is on. AJ watch out!”
A third even went so far as to suggest Fury is the ‘Muhammad Ali of our generation.’
And just like that, the idea of Fury versus Joshua is once again back on the table.
Fury versus Joshua – could it still be?
A clash between Fury and fellow Brit Anthony Joshua has been long touted as the dream all-British mega-fight – the kind that fills Wembley twice over. But despite years of teasing and near-misses, the two titans have never stepped into the ring together.
After Fury’s retirement earlier this year, most fans thought it was all over – another ‘what could have been’ in boxing’s long list of missed moments. But promoter Eddie Hearn believes there’s still life in the idea yet.
Speaking to Boxing News, Hearn said:
“The thing is with Tyson is, he’s not in decline. When you retire and you’re kind of past your best, I kind of get it, but he’s not. And that’s what gives me hope that one day he just picks up the phone to AJ or to Frank or Spencer and says, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s give the world the biggest fight out there.’ We can only hope.”
That fight, with Joshua still active and hunting for legacy-defining matchups, could be the biggest British sporting event in recent memory.
The Fury-Usyk factor
Fury’s two defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024 were the only blemishes on an otherwise dominant career. The Ukrainian remains unbeaten and has proven to be one of the most technically gifted heavyweights of this era – a puzzle Fury simply couldn’t crack.
Still, it’s hard to argue with Fury’s overall record. A two-time world heavyweight champion, he famously dethroned Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and stunned Deontay Wilder in their trilogy, cementing his place among the all-time greats.
Retirement? What retirement?
Let’s not forget – this isn’t the first time Fury’s called it quits. The boxer has ‘retired’ before, only to return with even more fire in his belly. With his name still dominating headlines and fans desperate to see him face Joshua, you’d be brave to bet against him doing it again.
So, is Fury’s latest training video just a fitness kick? Or is the King sharpening his crown for one last ride? Anything can happen.
