Prince Harry Quits Charity: What Happened?

Prince Harry has made the unexpected decision to resign from Sentebale, the charity he founded in honor of his mother, Princess Diana.

His departure comes amid a scandal that has shaken the foundations of the charity, after the chairman of the board, Sophie Chandauka, made serious allegations of abuse of power, harassment and management irregularities.

Sentebale, created in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, has been one of the most important causes for Harry, who has always expressed a strong emotional attachment to the project.

In January 2020, following his resignation from the royal family, he used an event at the organization to explain his departure, assuring that his commitment to the entity would be “unwavering.”

However, recent events have changed the picture completely.

The trigger for the crisis was the trustees’ request for Chandauka to resign from her position.

Instead of doing so, she filed suit in the High Court in London and took the case to the Charity Commission of England and Wales.

According to Chandauka, abuses of power and acts of discrimination have been committed within the organization, including misogyny and “misogynoir,” a term referring to specific discrimination against black women.

It is not yet clear whether these allegations directly target Harry, but their impact has been devastating for the foundation.

In a joint statement, he and Prince Seeiso deeply regretted the situation and explained that their resignation was a show of solidarity with the trustees who have also been forced to step down.

“It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation,” they said.

For her part, Chandauka has staunchly defended her position, arguing that she is denouncing mismanagement and will not allow her voice to be silenced.

“There are people in this world who behave as though they are above the law and mistreat people, and then play the victim card and use the very press they disdain to harm people who have the courage to challenge their conduct,” he said in a statement.

In the midst of the crisis, Sentebale has announced a restructuring of its leadership, focused on moving its direction to Africa, bringing it closer to the communities it serves.

It is unknown whether this change played a role in the deterioration of the relationship between Harry and the organization.
