Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen has been forced to deny smoking cannabis on a podcast after being quizzed over looking ‘pretty medicated’.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who joined the Cherries from Juventus for £12.6million last summer, has enjoyed an excellent season at the Vitality Stadium and is already attracting interest from top clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester United.

But now, while appearing on a podcast with football influencer Papa Pincus, the centre-half has been forced to clear up whether he smokes marijuana after claims were made about his appearance.

‘It really seems to me like you are pretty medicated on weed,’ podcast host Pincus said. ‘Do you smoke weed?’

After awkwardly laughing, Huijsen replied by revealing he suffers from ‘sleepy eyes’.

He said: ‘Basically, for everyone watching, I have sleepy eyes. I have it from my mum because my mum has sleepy eyes.

‘I’m not high. I’m sorry, I’m not high. We’re not allowed to take weed, it’s doping control. I’m not high. It’s how I was born. I can’t do anything about it.’

The host went on to reference a photograph of Huijsen holding up his Player of the Match award after guiding Bournemouth to a 3-0 win over Manchester United in December.

The Spanish defender scored the opener at Old Trafford before Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo netted twice in two minutes midway through the second half to hand the Red Devils a dismal defeat at home.

In the photograph, Huijsen’s right eye looks extremely red and bloodshot, which can be a symptom of smoking weed.

Clearing that up too, he added: ‘I got a ball in my eye. Someone shot and it went right in my eye. So I was even worse.’

Ahead of what promises to be a busy summer transfer window for the Spaniard, United are believed to be considering making a move for the teenager, according to Fabrizio Romano last month.

It is claimed the Red Devils face competition for his signature from Real Madrid and a handful of top German clubs.

Huijsen has made 23 Premier League appearances this term and has been part of a defence that has conceded just 36 goals. Only four clubs — Liverpool (27), Arsenal (24), Nottingham Forest (35) and Crystal Palace (33) — have conceded fewer.

After completing international duty with Spain, Huijsen will return to the Vitality Stadium for a huge FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on March 30.

With European qualification still on the table ahead of the Premier League run-in, the Cherries will subsequently hope to carve out wins against Ipswich, West Ham and Fulham in their next three league games after the FA Cup meeting with City.
