Kate Middleton’s pearl necklace for Commonwealth Day: what’s the story?

Kate Middleton has always been a topic of conversation when it comes to her style. For Commonwealth Day, she wore a spectacular outfit featuring a stunning red dress.
But the striking thing wasn’t just the color—it was how she styled the entire look. Kate clearly knows what she’s doing when it comes to jewelry.
The Princess of Wales wore a four-strand pearl necklace that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II herself.

It’s evident that the Queen loved pearls, just like her mother and grandmother.
In fact, within the royal family, pearls are a classic choice for funerals because they are both elegant and discreet.

Kate Middleton’s pearl necklace for Commonwealth Day certainly stood out.
Kate seems to have inherited this jewel, known as the “Japanese Pearl Necklace,” along with other royal pearls.

The necklace has an intriguing history: the pearls were gifted to Queen Elizabeth II by the Japanese government in 1975 during a state visit. They are top-quality cultured pearls, and the Queen commissioned Garrard, the Crown jeweler, to turn them into a necklace.
He added a spectacular diamond clasp. Queen Elizabeth first wore it in the 1980s and adored it for its mix of pearls and diamonds.

Kate has worn the necklace on several occasions, including important moments. The first time she was seen wearing it was in 2017, for the 70th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth and Philip.
She also wore it at the funerals of the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II, and more recently, at the second coronation ceremony of King Charles III in Scotland.

To complement her Commonwealth Day outfit, Kate completed her look with the famous Collingwood earrings: teardrop-shaped pearls with small diamonds. These earrings belonged to Princess Diana and were a wedding gift from the Spencers’ favorite jeweler in 1981.
Speaking of Diana, she was also a fan of the Japanese Pearl Necklace. She wore it to numerous gala dinners, often paired with the “Lover’s Knot” tiara and the Collingwood earrings—a timeless combination.
So, in addition to dazzling with her style, Kate Middleton also pays tribute to royal history through her jewelry choices.
