After nearly two decades at the top of professional cycling, Geraint Thomas has confirmed that 2024 will be his final year in the peloton.
The Welshman, who has enjoyed a glittering career with Olympic golds, World Championship titles, and a historic Tour de France victory, says the time is right to step away from the sport.
At 38, Thomas still plans to race one last Tour de France this summer, but rather than chasing the yellow jersey, he will focus on supporting his team, perhaps even going for a stage win. The INEOS Grenadiers rider shared the news on Instagram, writing:
“Thought it was time we made it official. Yes, this will be my last year in the peloton. It’s not been a bad run, eh? Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being a pro for 19 years. There’ll be lots of time to reflect, but before then, I’ve got some big races to prep for.”
Geraint Thomas’ next chapter: Ironman goals and homecoming to Cardiff
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Thomas revealed he was eager to return to his hometown of Cardiff and enjoy more time with his family. While he still loves the sport, he didn’t want to overstay his welcome in the peloton.
“This is my 19th year as a professional, and I didn’t want to do one year too many and be the grumpy guy in the team. I’m still enjoying it, I still feel competitive, but I think the timing is right.”
Although his professional cycling days are coming to an end, Thomas isn’t planning to slow down completely. He has already set his sights on taking on an Ironman after retirement.
“I need a purpose. Since I was about 17 or 18, I’ve always been working towards a goal. To not have anything to aim for might be nice for a month, but then I’d go crazy. I want to do an Ironman. I only run two or three times a year, so that’s something I’ll have to work on!”
Geraint Thomas eyes emotional career finale in Cardiff
Before calling it a day, Thomas hopes to end his career in the best way possible – racing on home soil. While his final race is yet to be confirmed, he is hoping to wrap things up at the Tour of Britain in September, possibly with the closing stage in Cardiff.
“It would be epic if that happens. I haven’t really thought about it much, but when I do, I know it’s going to be emotional. Maybe I’ll shed a tear or two.”
For a rider who has competed on the biggest stages, finishing his career in front of Welsh fans, back where it all started, would be the perfect final chapter. Whether it’s Cardiff or elsewhere, Thomas has already cemented his place as one of Britain’s greatest cyclists—and the end of his journey is sure to be celebrated across the sport.
