It’s here, people –  The only thing that makes life worth living after the Christmas comedown – the football transfer window

The winter transfer window is in full swing, and while it’s been a relatively quiet affair across Europe, two financial powerhouses have gone all in. Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City have thrown open their war chests, full guns blazing, with PSG bagging the biggest signing and City splashing a whopping €152 million on some much-needed fresh talent to cheer up the Etihad. Here are the top 10 signings so far – and some of them are absolute stunners

10. Donyell Malen (Borussia Dortmund to Aston Villa) – estimated €25 million fee.

From Arsenal’s academy to the Bundesliga battleground, Dutch forward Donyell Malen has had a rollercoaster ride. Now, he’s back in England, this time with high-flying Aston Villa, who are making a serious push for Champions League football this season. Can the player that Dortmund fans dubbed the ‘Dutch R9’ make his presence felt at Villa? This is a signing with huge potential.

9. Thiago Almada (Botafogo to Lyon) – Loan move

World Cup-winning midfielder Thiago Almada has made the switch from Brazil to France – but don’t expect Lyon fans to be celebrating just yet. The club is staring down the barrel of financial disaster, with authorities threatening automatic relegation unless they conjure up €100 million. The 23-year-old is moving on a free loan, thanks to both clubs being owned by American tycoon John Textor.

8. Luiz Henrique (Botafogo to Zenit St Petersburg) – €33 million

After being crowned South America’s best player in 2024, Luiz Henrique is heading to Russia’s top dogs, Zenit. The 24-year-old had a mixed stint with Real Betis, but now he’s got a fresh start and a hefty four-year contract with an optional fifth season in Saint Petersburg.

7. Abdukodir Khusanov (RC Lens to Manchester City) – around €40 million

Uzbekistan makes Premier League history. City have snapped up 20-year-old defensive sensation Khusanov, making him the most expensive Uzbek player in history. Having caught Pep’s eye while at Lens, he’s now set to debut at the Etihad. Let’s have it. Could this be another masterstroke from City’s scouting network?

6. Antony (Manchester United to Real Betis) – Loan move

Remember when Manchester United paid €100 million for Antony? Nobody thought that was a bargain at the time and it hasn’t exactly aged well. With just one Premier League goal since April 2023, the Brazilian has been shipped off to Real Betis in a desperate bid to regain his confidence. Will he rediscover his Ajax form, or has his Old Trafford nightmare just gone international? It’s a decent move for all parties involved under the current circumstances. Let’s watch this space and see how things pan out.

5. Vitor Reis (Palmeiras to Manchester City) for an estimated €37 million

City weren’t done there – they’ve also grabbed Brazil’s latest defensive prodigy, Vitor Reis. Palmeiras wanted to keep hold of the 19-year-old centre-back until the summer, but the Premier League champions weren’t taking no for an answer. With just 22 senior appearances to his name, is this a risk or a revelation? He may need some time to adapt, but he could prove to be an amazing signing.

4. Randal Kolo Muani (PSG to Juventus) – Loan move

PSG’s €95 million signing from 2023, Kolo Muani, has had a complete nightmare in Paris. With game time dwindling, he’s swapped the Eiffel Tower for the Mole Antonelliana, heading to Juve on loan. Can he revive his career in Serie A with la vecchia signora?

3. Kyle Walker (Manchester City to AC Milan) – Loan move

Eight years, 17 trophies and enough female drama to fill a double-decker bus – but it’s time to move on. Kyle Walker’s time at City is sadly up, and he’s now packing his bags for a stint in Milan. With just 18 months left on his contract, Pep Guardiola confirmed the veteran full-back wanted out. Will Milan make the move permanent? This might be a solid move for all involved.

2. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli to PSG) – €70 million

Step aside, Mbappé – ‘Kvaradona’ is here! The Georgian wizard, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, has finally escaped Napoli after a breakdown in contract talks, and PSG have pounced like a cheetah. Having played a key role in Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years, can he now light up the Parc des Princes? This could be a great move for PSG and Kvaratskhelia. The transition between the Serie A and the Ligue 1 will be less of a shock to the system than if he’d moved to the Premier League or La Liga. He could prove invaluable to PSG’s 2025 campaign if he hits the ground running.

1. Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City) – €75 million

The hype around this one is insane. Manchester City have pulled off a Bundesliga raid, bringing in goal machine Omar Marmoush. The 25-year-old Egyptian forward has outperformed even Harry Kane in some metrics, racking up 27 goals and 15 assists in just 18 months. With Haaland’s future always in doubt, could Marmoush be the next star at the Etihad? City fans are excited.

With Lionel Messi recently announcing his plan to return to Barcelona to family and friends, will we see another blockbuster move? Stay tuned – because in football, anything can happen!

Note: Transfer fees are based on the latest available data as of January 29, 2025.
