Liverpool supporters think they have spotted a sign that Virgil van Dijk will follow Mo Salah in signing a new contract on Friday.

The Reds announced on Friday morning that Salah has finally put pen to paper on a new two-year deal worth £375,000 per week, ending a contract saga that has cast its shadow over their brilliant campaign.

Liverpool have broken a golden rule in offering him a new deal, as Fenway Sports Group are typically reluctant to hand out new contracts to players over 30.

Salah’s contract was set to expire in the summer, a situation captain Van Dijk also finds himself in.

Mail Sport reported earlier this week that both stars were close to committing their future to the club and fans have a theory as to why Van Dijk will also do so on Friday.

The Redmen TV, who have nearly 700,000 followers, posted a picture of the two players side-by-side with their shirt numbers showing, writing: ‘today’s date anyone?’

Friday is April 11, which can also be written as 11/4, the numbers on the back of Salah (11) and Van Dijk’s (4) shirts.

And supporters believe their club has tactically waited until this day to announce both new deals.

‘It just has to be doesn’t it,’ wrote one in response to the viral post while another said ‘surely they’ve done that on purpose’.

‘Liverpool announcing 11 and 4 on 11/04 is absolutely GOAT tier marketing if it happens,’ another wrote.

‘You think they planned it like this along along,’ joked another while one said ‘I did think this, happy Friday Reds’.

In a statement following the announcement of his new deal, Salah said: ‘off course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football,’ he told the club website.

‘It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.

‘I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.’

A contract offer had been on the table for some time but Salah and his representative, Ramy Abbas, wanted a better deal. It is understood that Salah initially wanted a three-year extension, and while FSG have not given him that, they have broken their traditional policy by offering him a new deal at his age.

Salah had attracted mass interest from Saudi Arabia in the last two years. That saw Al-Ittihad make a £150million bid in August 2023, which was swiftly rejected by Liverpool.

The Saudis have retained an interest in Salah and explored whether they could convince him to join them this summer, when his Liverpool contract was set to expire. The 32-year-old has long been the ‘dream target’ of the Saudi Pro League.
