Eric Dane, best known for playing McSteamy in Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, has shared that he’s been diagnosed with ALS, a serious and progressive neurological condition.

The 52-year-old actor made the announcement in an interview with People magazine, saying he’s leaning on his family as he begins this new and uncertain chapter of his life.

“I was diagnosed with ALS… I’m thankful to have my beloved family by my side as we navigate this,” Dane said, choosing honesty over silence.

For many fans, the news came out of nowhere. And for Dane, it seems the focus right now is on staying grounded. He’s asked for privacy, not just for himself but for his loved ones, while they adjust to what this diagnosis means day to day.

Eric Dane continues filming Euphoria despite ALS diagnosis

One thing that stands out? He’s not stepping back from work. In fact, he’s heading back to film Euphoria next week.

“I feel lucky to still be able to work,” he said.

It’s a powerful reminder that life doesn’t pause, even in the middle of something this heavy. On Euphoria, Dane plays a complicated father with a dark past — a role that’s miles away from the charming plastic surgeon he played on Grey’s Anatomy. But both characters helped make him a household name.

Filming for the next season of Euphoria is set to start on 14 April, and Dane is ready to be there, continuing to do what he loves.

What is ALS? Symptoms, prognosis and what to expect

ALS — or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — affects the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles. That means things most of us take for granted, like walking, talking, swallowing, and eventually even breathing, slowly become more difficult.

There’s no known cure yet, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is around three to five years, though some people live longer. It’s a hard road — and one that requires not just medical care, but emotional strength.

Dane’s announcement has sparked a wave of support from fans and fellow actors alike. For now, he’s focused on his work, his family, and taking each day as it comes. He didn’t owe anyone this honesty — but by sharing it, he’s reminding us all that even our favourite stars are human too.
