Amanda Seyfried says marketing team ruined ‘Jennifer’s Body’

Amanda Seyfried is pointing fingers.

In a new GQ interview, the 39-year-old actress revealed who she blames for “Jennifer’s Body” flopping at the box office when it came out in 2009.

“If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing. The marketing sucked, it just did,” she said. “And we all agree.”

Seyfried, who starred in the comedy horror film alongside Megan Fox, said the movie’s marketing team “cheapened it like it was just a gory romp.”

“I think they ruined it,” she added, noting that director Karyn Kusama and screenwriter Diablo Cody “were a really good team.”

“I love Needy. It was the first time I got to play really nerdy, wearing the glasses,” Seyfried continued. “Megan got to turn into a demon, it was awesome. We all just had a lot of fun, so I wanna celebrate it by doing a sequel.”

Seyfried also said that she “can’t critique” the film because, in her opinion, “it’s perfect.”

“It’s got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken and beautiful and smart and funny,” she said. “We were expressing a certain angst in a very specific, comedic way in a very specific genre. The special effects were so incredible, there were stunts, there was everything you could want.”

“Jennifer’s Body” is about a demonically possessed high school student named Jennifer Check (Fox) who kills her male classmates to survive. Seyfried plays Jennifer’s nerdy best friend, Needy Lesnicki.

The film failed to make a splash in movie theaters at the time. However, it’s since garnered a cult following.

Earlier this month, Seyfried told The Hollywood Reporter that she thinks “Jennifer’s Body” has “aged well.”

“I thought ‘Jennifer’s Body’ was going to be huge. Diablo Cody, Karyn Kusama, Megan Fox … we had all the ingredients, and it just didn’t happen,” she said.

“I think there’s going to be another one of that, too,” Seyfried added about a possible sequel. “We’re all game.”

Fox, for her part, discussed making “Jennifer’s Body 2” in an interview with The Washington Post in 2021.

“I don’t think it’s a hard movie to make a sequel to,” she said. “I mean, they should make it into a TV series. That would be cool.”

Cody, 46, teased a potential sequel while chatting with Nylon last year.

“I think that was always my dream, but I certainly didn’t think it would be realistic,” the screenwriter said. “People rarely want to make sequels to films that don’t perform. Now I feel like it could be a possibility.”

“I’m ready to go,” added Cody. “I just need to assemble the right team that believes in me.”
