Meghan Markle on The Drew Barrymore Show: Why was it awkward?

Meghan Markle surprised many by appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show right after the premiere of her new Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan”.

The conversation between Meghan, 43, and Drew, 50, was quite extensive. They talked about everything from the “vow” Prince Harry made to her while they were dating, to what it means to be a working mother of Archie and Lilibet, to her aspirations with her brand As Ever, and more.

However, it seems some noticed that the atmosphere grew a bit tense. The reason? Body language.

Judi James, a body language expert, analyzed the situation and said Meghan seemed a bit “wary” during the interview.

According to James, Drew is known for being very affectionate with her guests, but Meghan didn’t seem too thrilled about that style.

James said: “This is a rare pose from Meghan, who is normally the first one to move in with the hugs to register the warm, spontaneously tactile side that was apparently met with a tsunami of ice water from the royal firm back in the UK.”

She added that Meghan adopted a straighter, more formal posture, possibly reflecting the reaction she received from British royalty when attempting to hug them:

“Meghan adopted a straight, polite, more regal-looking pose, perhaps mirroring the kind of response she was met with from the UK royals when she was busy hugging them.”

James also observed that Drew was very affectionate, “clings relentlessly, curling her arms around Meghan’s waist in a partial koala embrace and tilting her head to nestle against Meghan’s locks.”

Meanwhile, Meghan seemed more “distanced emotionally and keener to communicate with the camera than with her host.”

It seems Meghan was trying to maintain some distance: “Meghan held both hands up in front of her body though, with hands curled into fists in what looked like a subtle barrier ritual,” she said. “Her facial expression also suggested some possible unease.”

Although it seems that the conversation had its moments of discomfort according to the body language analysis, Meghan enjoyed her return to television, especially because her last appearance on a show was in 2021 with Ellen DeGeneres.
