The James Bond universe is facing a shake-up as Amazon gains full creative control over the iconic franchise.

Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have long been the guardians of 007, are stepping back, leaving fans and industry insiders wondering: Who will be the next James Bond?

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s top executive, decided to take the question directly to the fans. Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), he asked who should don the tuxedo and carry the license to kill. The response was overwhelmingly in favour of Henry Cavill, with the actor quickly trending online.

Why Henry Cavill is the fan favourite for 007

While names like Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have been tossed around, Cavill’s name stood out among the rest. His blend of suave sophistication and physical prowess seems to embody everything fans want in the next Bond.

Cavill’s history with the role only fuels the excitement. He auditioned for the role back in 2006 for Casino Royale. Director Martin Campbell described Cavill’s audition as “tremendous,” but ultimately, at just 23 years old, Cavill was deemed too young, and the part went to Daniel Craig.

Reflecting on this missed opportunity, Campbell shared in a 2023 interview: “Henry would have been an excellent Bond. He looked great, was physically fit… very handsome, very chiselled. He just seemed a bit young at the time.”

Cavill himself has taken this in stride, acknowledging that he wasn’t quite ready back then: “They obviously went with Daniel, and I think it was an incredible choice. He did an amazing job, and I’m glad they made that decision.”

Is Henry Cavill’s Amazon deal a stepping stone to James Bond?

There’s more to the speculation than just fan wishes. Cavill is already deeply involved with Amazon, having signed on to star in and produce the highly anticipated Warhammer 40,000 project. This connection has sparked rumours that his chances of becoming Bond may be stronger now that Amazon holds the creative reins.

With Cavill already on board with Amazon for another major project, could a transition to James Bond be in the cards? The timing and corporate ties certainly add weight to the speculation.

Is 40 too old for James Bond? The age debate surrounding Henry Cavill

One of the big questions surrounding Cavill’s potential casting is his age. At 40, some wonder if he could commit to the typical multi-film contract required of a Bond actor. Martin Campbell noted that actors typically sign on for three Bond films, which could span six to nine years. By the end of such a commitment, Cavill would be approaching 50.

Campbell added: “When Daniel came to No Time to Die, he was really at an age where one more would have been too much for him.” Still, the director emphasized that Cavill is in great shape and certainly has the charisma and skill for the role.

With Amazon steering the ship, the future of James Bond feels both unpredictable and exciting. Fans are holding their breath to see if Henry Cavill will finally get his shot at playing the world’s most famous spy.

Whether the next Bond is Cavill or someone else, one thing is certain: with Amazon’s involvement, the 007 franchise is about to enter a bold new chapter.
