Jude Bellingham scored a dramatic late winner to give Real Madrid a 3-2 advantage over Manchester City heading into next week’s second leg at the Bernabeu.
The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo both going close, but City worked their way back into the contest and took the lead in the 19th minute after Erling Haaland fired home following fine work from Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol.
City threatened to extend their advantage as Manuel Akanji clipped the crossbar with a header, but the Swiss defender limped off at half time after Grealish had been forced off with his own injury blow.
Madrid ramped up the pressure after the interval, and got their reward on the hour mark, with Kylian Mbappe netting a deserved equaliser. The French striker got on the end of Dani Ceballos’ clipped through ball, and the ball fortuitously spun off his shin and past Ederson.
Madrid looked the more likely winners heading into the closing stages, but with a little over 10 minutes left on the clock Phil Foden was brought down just inside the area by Ceballos, and Haaland stepped up to fire home the subsequent penalty.
But City could not hold on to their advantage for long as Brahim Diaz came off the bench to haunt his former club by firing home an equaliser with four minutes to go, before Bellingham had the final say.
