Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is boasting record traffic in the European travel scene as its two main airports – Henri Coandă International Airport and Aurel Vlaicu Bucharest-Băneasa International Airport – have recorded over 16 million air traffic passengers in 2024.

According to the Bucharest National Airports Company (CNAB), cited by Romania Insider, this represents a 9.22 per cent increase compared to 2023.

Henri Coandă International Airport accounted for the lion’s share of the growth, managing 15,946,791 passengers in 2024, CNAB reported. The airport’s strategic location, combined with increased connections to major cities like London, Paris, and Berlin, has positioned it as Romania’s primary aviation hub.

According to Travel and Tour World, “Bucharest’s rise is so explosive that airlines are practically fighting for more routes to and from the city.” Major carriers, including Lufthansa and Ryanair, are expanding operations here.

Aurel Vlaicu Bucharest-Băneasa Airport, Romania

The smaller Aurel Vlaicu Bucharest-Băneasa International Airport served 107,087 passengers in 2024. The airport offers a retro charm and is popular with private jets and low-cost airlines. It provides a quieter, less crowded option for travellers.

Why Bucharest is becoming a popular travel destination

Bucharest is becoming a must-visit destination for several reasons:

• Affordability: As Travel and Tour World noted, “Romania offers some of the best value-for-money experiences in Europe,” appealing to budget-conscious travellers.
• Cultural landmarks: The city boasts highlights such as the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest administrative buildings in the world, and a vibrant Old Town with trendy bars and historic architecture. There’s also the Therme Bucuresti spa, Europe’s largest wellness and relaxation centre, which has gone viral on social media due to its vast and stunning interior.

Despite its success, Bucharest’s airport infrastructure is under pressure. According to Travel and Tour World, CNAB has highlighted plans to expand terminals and streamline operations to manage growing traffic. However, issues such as overcrowding and potential delays remain as concerns.
