Sara Stanner from the British Nutrition Foundation says these diets have been linked to a lower risk of health issues like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. But when it comes to immunity, it’s not about finding a magical superfood. Instead, it’s about ensuring your immune cells have all the nutrients they need to work properly. While meat and fish are excellent sources of things like zinc and vitamin B12, most of these can also be found in plant-based options—it just takes a little planning.

Foods like lentils, brown rice, and broccoli provide the fibre your gut bacteria need to produce short-chain fatty acids, which help protect against infections.
Nutrition expert Tim Spector encourages people to aim for variety. “The more colourful your plate, the better,” he says. Phytochemicals—the natural compounds found in plants—add both colour and health benefits. While they might not work miracles, a diet rich in fruits and veggies is one of the best ways to keep your gut and immune system in good shape.
Simple ways to incorporate more plants into your meals
Switching to a plant-based diet doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small by adding more vegetables or swapping meat for beans or lentils in some meals. If you’re cutting out animal products completely, make sure you’re getting enough nutrients like protein, iron, and B12 from sources like tofu, fortified cereals, or plant-based protein powders.
While no diet can guarantee perfect immunity, focusing on whole, nutrient-rich foods is a step in the right direction. So, whether you’re looking to fully embrace plant-based eating or just add more greens to your diet, the benefits go far beyond just your immune system.
