British boxer Tyson Fury stormed out in protest to the judges decision after his rematch with World Champion Oleksander Usyk yesterday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Tyson Fury’s hopes to avenge himself after his first defeat by the Ukranian earlier this year turned to dust as the judges declared Usyk the winner on points.
Despite Fury’s obvious anger, and his promoter Frank Warren describing the judges’ unanimous decision as ‘crazy’, the majority of boxing fans and publications supported the 116-112 outcome.
Fury’s reaction may be due to wounded pride as Usyk remains the only pro-boxer to have defeated Fury, who is also known as The Gypsy King.
As to the future, although Warren says Fury will ‘take some time to assess his options’ retirement is unlikely for the 36 year old.
Most consider Usyk the better performer
Although the fight was thrillingly close, Usyk’s performance appeared to be more strategic and controlled than the British fighter’s which sparked in moments but not enough to beat the Ukrainian down.
Fury’s best moments were his blow to Usyk’s head in the second round, two lefts to the face in the third which left Usyk with a bloody nose and a volley of short punches plus his trademark uppercut in the fifth round.
Usyk gained momentum in the second half of the fight as the weight difference between the two seemed to cause Fury to tire sooner. As Usyk went on the attack Fury often struggled to keep him back. Although Fury kept trying for a knockout, former Olympic Gold Medallist Usyk remained strong and appeared the more consistent.
Dubois claims his own fight with Usyk ‘unfair’
Further drama took place during the post-fight press conferences when fellow British boxer Daniel Dubois gate crashed Usyk’s interview to demand his own chance for vengeance.
Grabbing the microphone and shouting ‘Usyk, I want my revenge!’ Dubois claims the justice of his defeat by Usyk last year was also in question.
During the Dubois vs Usyk fight in Poland last August, Dubois knocked down Usyk but it was deemed a ‘low blow’ and Usyk was given almost four minutes to recover. Usyk went on to win the fight after knocking out Dubois, who was thought by many to be the underdog. However, Dubois claimed later the judges treatment of Usyk in the fifth round were ‘an injustice’ and which ‘needed to be called out’ saying ‘they just cheated.’
Potential opponents for Usyk
Although a potential follow up clash for Usyk would be to fight Daniel ‘Dynamite’ Dubois 37 year old Usyk, who retains his World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation titles could take his pick of opponents.
Potential challengers include the New Zealander Joseph Parker who is currently on great form; Zhilei Zhang, who bounced back from his defeat by Parker to knock out Deontay Wilder, Turkish-German heavyweight Agit Kabayel, or Martin Bakole, the enormous Congolese boxer who is sixth in WBC rankings.
However, Usyk says that, right now, he just wants ‘to rest and play with my children’.
Future Clashes for Fury
One option for Fury would be to attempt a third shot at defeating Usyk, a match which many fans would welcome due to the increasing rivalry between these well-matched boxers.
If Fury decides to finally accept his defeat by Usyk, a battle with boxer Anthony Joshua would also be something fans have been desperate to see. These two most prominent British fighters of their generation have never had a showdown.
Following Fury’s defeat, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said ‘The reality is there’s only one fight for Tyson Fury and that’s Anthony Joshua’.
Fury himself admits that it would be ‘a travesty’ if the rivals never went head to head.
